Composite resin veneers are reversible but porcelain veneers are not.
Your consultation with Dr. Chiem will begin with an oral exam and x-rays to look at the condition of your teeth. your Albuquerque dentist will ask what issues you have with your teeth and will determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers.
Dr. Chiem will administer local anesthesia and use a grinding tool to remove .5 mm of enamel from your tooth
Digital impressions will be taken of your teeth and sent to a dental lab that fabricates your veneers. It will take a few weeks for porcelain veneers to be ready, so we will place temporary veneers over your teeth while you wait.
Your dentist in Albuquerque, NM will check the fit of your veneer before bonding it to your tooth. We can trim the veneer if any adjustments need to be made. Once satisfactory, we will clean and etch (roughen) the teeth to help the bonding process.
The veneers are cemented onto your teeth and cured with UV light. Any excess cement will be removed and we will check if any additional adjustments need to be made.
While veneers do not fix structural problems, they do cover up imperfections that detract from your smile. Veneers will appear uniform in size and shape, make your teeth appear whiter and straighter, and cover dental problems like fractures or stains.
The following cosmetic problems can be covered with veneers:
While veneers need to be replaced, the preparation of your enamel is permanent. Veneers are .5 mm thick which is why we have to remove this amount of enamel from your tooth for them to blend in and properly bond with your tooth.
This procedure is irreversible so you will always have to have your teeth covered with veneers. However, there are alternatives to porcelain veneers such as lumineers which do not require any removal of the tooth enamel and can be removed later on.
Porcelain veneers last for 10-15 years with proper care and composite resin veneers last for 4-8 years. You will need to prevent wear and tear and staining of your veneers. We recommend that you practice good oral hygiene, wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth, avoid smoking, and don’t chew on hard foods, objects, or use your teeth as tools.
